History of Centerville
In 1796, during George Washington's last term as president, the first settlers came to Centerville and Washington Township, Ohio. Brothers-in-laws Aaron Nutt, Benjamin Robbins and Benjamin Archer were Revolutionary Wars veterans. They came from Kentucky to survey the area in February 1796, two months before the first settlement in Dayton. The three men drew lots for their land and claimed bounties granted for their service in the war. Within the next few years, their families joined them in this new community.

Another early settler was John Hole, the first doctor in the Miami Valley. He is credited with building the first home in Centerville; as early as 1796, he built a log cabin for his family near Silver Creek, now known as Holes Creek. An elementary school is named for Dr. Hole. He named our county, Montgomery County, after his commanding officer and revolutionary war hero, Brigadier General Richard Montgomery.

The older part of downtown Centerville is called the Architectural Preservation District, located near Main Street (State Route 48) and Franklin Street (State Route 725). This area reflects the "Main Street" downtown era that shaped American towns and cities in the early 1900s. Many of the buildings in the APD were built prior to World War and represent diverse architectural styles. The rich craftsmanship and detail make them a valuable asset to the Centerville community. The city is committed to preserving this unique area.

Centerville-Washington Park District
The mission of the Centerville-Washington Park District is to preserve open space while providing quality outdoor education and recreation programs that enhance the quality of life for local residents and future generations.

The Centerville-Washington Park District was created in 1959 by local residents with the foresight to realize that areas needed to be set aside as parks while the community was developed with houses and businesses.

Recreation Center
Hundreds of programs and recreational opportunities are offered at the township's 26-acre recreation complex at 895 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd. The 50,000-square-foot Recreation Center includes a natatorium with two indoor pools and a 140-foot water flume slide, two gymnasiums, locker rooms, weight room, indoor running track, indoor climbing wall and multi-purpose rooms with kitchens. Adjacent to the facility is a 26-acre park with a running track, play field, historic log cabin, spacious picnic shelter and three ponds.
