The Arts in Dayton

Museums
The Dayton Art Institute, one of the nation's finest mid-sized art museums, features world-class special exhibitions; a family-oriented, interactive Experiencenter; and a diverse permanent collection of African, American, Asian and European Art.
Performing Arts
Dayton Playhouse is one of Dayton's oldest and largest community based theatres using only the best in local talent. Dayton Playhouse is home to the nationally renowned festival of new works, FutureFest. Through FutureFest, held the last full weekend of July, Dayton Playhouse has introduced over 80 new works into the American Theatre. Dayton Playhouse also produces a season of six productions featuring big Broadway style musicals. Dayton Playhouse is located in the beautiful Wegerzyn MetroParks' Garden at 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave.
The Victoria Theatre Association features performances for both the young and the young at heart. See spectacular performances at the Victoria's Broadway on Main Series, Young at Heart Series and Theater in the Loft. Productions include Sleeping Beauty on Ice, performed by the world-renowned St. Petersburg State Ice Ballet, and King Arthur. During the summer, catch an old flick during the Hot Times, Cool Movies film series.
The Dayton Opera Association has held the greatest number of subscriptions of any opera company in Ohio. The opera company's season has included classic like Lucia Di Lammermoor, Les Miserables. Performances are at Memorial Hall. 125 E. First St.
Music and Dance
As the leading arts service agency for Greater Dayton, Culture Works is a resource for the entire community. Culture Works provides the resources necessary to ensure a stable and dependable base of support for the community's cultural assets. Organizations funded by Culture Works include Cityfolk, Dayton Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Opera, The Muse Machine, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, The Human Race Theatre Company and several smaller community-based organizations. Culture Works publishes a community arts and cultural calendar featuring the best of Dayton and also promotes the Passport which is a discount card honored by almost all of Dayton's arts and cultural organizations.
As the second oldest ballet company in the United States, Dayton Ballet is a sparkle in the Gem City, Dayton, Ohio. During 2004, there are several outstanding performances for Dayton audiences of all ages and tastes. In January, Dayton Ballet will entertain you with the first repertory program of the season, Beyond the Limits. Several ballets, with a contemporary point of view, will fill the evening and demonstrate the true talent and athleticism of Dayton Ballet's company members. In March, Dayton Ballet will be flying high in Peter Pan. This fun and fanciful ballet follows the adventures of Peter, Wendy, The Lost Boys and Captain Hook in Never Never Land. In the spring, a second repertory program, Cool & Classic, demonstrates our company's exquisite technique with a traditional theme including classical music, tutus and choreography. In the fall, a Dayton classic returns. An American Cinderella was a world premiere ballet in 1997 and was produced and created in Dayton. In December, a fresh version of Nutcracker returns as the center of Dayton's holiday season celebrations at the Schuster Center. Dayton Ballet performances are at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre.
Since the late '60s, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company has received national recognition for its performances of American modern dance. The company premieres works by emerging artists and classic pieces by internationally acclaimed choreographers.
The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1933 and is the oldest and largest performing arts group in the Miami Valley. The orchestra offers visitors an exciting and wide-ranging repertoire with a variety of series from classical to casual classics and coffee concerts. Concerts are held at the Schuster Performing Arts Center, Victoria Theatre and Fraze Pavilion. Performance Place - 109 N. Main St., Suite 200.
Arts Centers
Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center located at Second and Main Streets in downtown Dayton is poised to become a landmark facility for Dayton's arts and cultural life. Schuster is comprised of two distinct structures - a performing arts center and an office/condominium tower. The performing arts center serves as the focal point of the facility, and includes the 2300 seat Mead Theatre, 150 seat Mathile Black Box Theatre and a 120 seat restaurant. The tower rises 224 feet from the sidewalk, and includes eight floors of office space and nine stories devoted to luxury condominiums. A Wintergarden, featuring palm trees set against a block-long, glass-enclosed atrium, ties these two elements together. Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Dayton Opera will call the Schuster Center home, and the Dayton Ballet and the Victoria Theatre Association will present select performances there as well.
The Victoria Theatre is the gem of downtown Dayton. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it features a fabulous marble and brass lobby. The Victoria Theatre is home to the Victoria Theatre Association, as well as many other Dayton arts organizations, including the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's Coffee/Casual Series, The Muse Machine and CITYFOLK. The Victoria Theatre Association presents a variety of life-celebrating performances. In addition to the immensely popular Broadway Series, it offers Theatre for the Young at Heart Family Series; the Hot Times...Cool Films series; Star Extras; and DISCOVERY!, curriculum-enhanced live theatre productions for school children. The Victoria Theatre is located at the corner of Main and First Streets.
Dayton Dragons
The Dayton Dragons are a Class A minor league baseball team, affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds, that plays in the Midwest League. The team's home park is Fifth Third Field in Dayton. During its first season the Dragons set a class A baseball attendance record of 581,853. That record was broken in 2003 when 590,382 fans -- ranking seventh in all of minor league baseball -- went through the turnstiles.
